Approximately 27,000 were made for Venezuela. This was patterned after the Belgian M1889 bayonet. They were originally made with a quillon but most of them have been cut off. Overall, this bayonet is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with average-stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have moderate oxidation and light scrapes. The remaining finish has turned a darker gray patina color. The rivets securely fasten the grips. They have light oxidation. The grip panels have scattered light chips, compressions and draglines. The wood has darkened with time. The knife appears straight and not bent. The blade's spine, fullers and sides have light scrapes. The blade's cutting edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The finish is in the white and has started to turn a darker patina color. There is light layer of dried cosmoline on it. The right guard is marked with the serial number that appears to be "1825", but it is a little challenging to see and the "8" may be a different number. There are no other visible markings. The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The bayonet slides in and out correctly. The frog stud is securely fastened to the body. The body has moderate oxidation and scrapes. The remaining finish has turned a darker patina color. The scabbard is marked on the side of the frog stud "T", but no other markings are visible. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Venezuelan Gewehr 1871/84 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
