This is a vintage original photograph depicting an early WWII-era biplane surrounded by a group of uniformed individuals, likely pilots and ground crew, at an airfield in Chatillon-sur-Seine, France, during 1918. The aircraft is identifiable by its dual-wing structure, characteristic of military biplanes from that time. The people in the image are dressed in heavy coats, suggesting a cold environment, reflecting military attire of the era. The 157th Aero Squadron was active during World War I, engaging in reconnaissance missions and supporting the Allied forces. This squadron played a significant role in the air combat of the period and contributed to the evolution of military aviation tactics. Captured during their time on the airfield, such images provide a glimpse into the daily lives of these aviators and ground crew, showing the camaraderie and intensity of life during the war.
