Narrative: When I was in London last I stood contemplating a “ professional b e a u t y " holding her little court in the gallery at Hampton Palace. “Just look over her head,” said a cynical old gentleman at my elbow. I looked and beheld a picture of such ravishing charm that at once the living beauty beneath lapsed into the second rank, and I breathlessly exclaimed: “ Who is she ?” “One of the beautiful Miss Gunnings,” replied my friend, “and the women of to-day ought to petition that her picture may be turned to the wall when they are on view.” Looking up the history of this lovely creature, I found that the “three beautiful Miss Gunnings ” were ‘Irish girls of good family but no fortune. The youngest as a mere child was married in Ireland, but the two older ones determined to bring the faces which were indeed their fortunes to London. They were first presented at the Vice-Regal Court at Dublin, and not being able to buy dresses for the occasion, borrowed them from the Dublin theatre, Elizabeth appearing in the robes of Lady Macbeth, and Maria in those of Juliet, a choice which suggests their respective styles.
