Description: Vintage early 2nd edition Whitman folder for Shield nickels, 1866 to 1883. This vintage folder continued the format used in the first edition folders which were made from mid 1941 to early 1942, somewhat less than one year. This folder is an error folder for two reasons. First it contains a non-exiistant entries for the 1866 nickel, those being "small date and large motto" plus a "large date small motto" varieties! Imagine when shield nickel collectors tried to find these varieties with no success! The entirety of first edition folders was produced with this flaw in the 1866 issues but there is another error in this folder, and that is that the Roosevelt dime series was said to have begun in 1945 and not 1946! These combo errors finally got back to Whitman and the appropriate corrections were made. Most of the second edition shield nickel folders you may run across will have the corrected version for 1866. Should be of interest to folder collectors because this one is very scarce. And of course it can be used to house your set of shield nickels. Just use the second 1866 opening to display the reverse having rays between the stars of reverse. A nice little bonus for a way to use this extra opening. Thanks for looking!!
