Description: VINTAGE "The Witch's Pursuit" TAM O'SHANTER Pub Story Pitcher. The rotating relief depicts a nightmarish evening endured by Tam, a drunken farmer, as described in a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). After tarrying too long and imbibing too much at the local ale house, Tam rides home during a storm on his horse, Meg. Tam and Meg race toward the River Doon, hoping to escape a couple of witches and warlocks who are in hot pursuit. In the end, Tam and Meg reach the river (which the spirits dare not cross) and make their way to safety—although not before poor Meg loses her tail to the grasp of a witch (handle of the pitcher).
