Description: Selling my vintage, rare or at least unusual, Oscar Schmidt Type A autoharp which features 12 chords and 37 strings, unlike the more common 36 string versions. So here is what I know. I got this when we had to cleanout the old homestead. Where it came from I don’t know since no one in the family played. So, I brought it home, put 2 eye screws and somestring on the back and hung it on the wall of my home where it has been ever since. The autoharp is in very good condition considering it’s age. All 37 strings are present as are all cord buttons, bars, and labels. The one exception may be there is no model or other identification label in the sound hole as some have, and I’m not sure if there ever was one. It is hand crafted with a wood body painted black. The number 5411 is stamped on the back. There are minor dings to the paint, especially on the back, and edge and corner rubs to the paint. The most damage is to the right side of the scale label where it appears to be worn away, possibly by playing it long ago with a pick. There is no case. It was in such bad shape that I threw it away after the last move. So here is what I don’t know, but doing a lot of guesstimating here based on some research. Like I said, I believe this to be a rare find, or at least unusual, because of it having 37 strings, not the common 36. I have found only 2 other such models described anywhere. I believe it was manufactured in 1954 or 1955. If anyone knows more about these things than I do please let me know where I might be wrong. So here is what I think. Whether you play or want to learn or just want a piece of Americana folk music to hang on the wall (I left the string on), this 37-string quality autoharp from Oscar Schmidt should work nicely.
