Description: This is a very good and very rare example of a Goodell manufactured large 12 inch sweep bit brace. “It’s This brace utilizes 2 particular patents, one was for the ratchet mechanism by Goodell on Dec 27 1892. The patent number is 488,691, see photo of actual patent info. It has a fully boxed ratcheting mechanism with the reversing control being an eye hook on the underside of the ratchet housing. It works very nicely. A brace with this ratcheting feature is listed a a “B” rarety in Peterson’s “American Patented Brace” which means no more than 20 were found by the time on publication. The second patent for this brace was for the bit stock or chuck and jaws which was patented by Francis M Hay in 1894 for his “Fast acting rotary Chuck” In his book “The American Patented Brace by R Pearson the rarity of a brace with the first feature mentioned is a “B” meaning only between 6 to 20 examples had been seen at the time of publication. The rarity on a brace with The Hay patent bit stock was “NS” or not seen. This brace has other premium features like Bolivian Rosewood Handles, steel clad roller bearing head, a sweep handle that runs on adjustable steel collars. It is a fairly early model Circa 1905 to 1915 or so nearly 120 years old. There are wrench and owners marks on the chuck as seen in photos. This is the first one of these I’ve seen and it works like it should and is still tight with no excess play at the joints. I lubricated and tested this brace with a 9/16” auger bit through a a piece of 2x2, the bit held without slippage through the hole boring. Fine collectible user in very good cosmetic and working condition. Check out my other posts as I combine shipping whenever possible. I am in upstate South Carolina. I have recently retired. One of my hobbies has been woodworking, but never had the time to do it as well as would like. A few years ago I became passionate about using vintage hand tools vs. battery or electric powered whenever it made sense to do so. Today my passion still thrives and I enjoy properly oiling/waxing, cleaning or refurbishing, if needed those same vintage woodworking tools. My goal is to place as many of these high quality, made in the USA vintage hand tools back into the hands of today’s craftsmen. I would never “part out” a good tool just for the proceeds. If the tool I have acquired is serviceable I will put it into as good of condition it can be and sell to friends or on eBay. All I am trying to do is receive some compensation for my time and retain enough capital to be able to purchase more tools, some in need of gentle care.
