The beads are late 19th to early 20th century.A Skookum doll was a Native American themed doll, sold as a souvenir item in the early 20th century. Although considered collectible, they are not authentic Native American dolls, as they were designed and created by a white woman, and quickly mass-produced. "Mary Francis (sometimes spelled Frances) Woods dolls are highly collectible. They are often mistaken as Skookum dolls as they were made about the same time and even sold in some of the same tourist shops, but are distinctly different. The most amazing feature of M F Woods dolls is the painted faces, becoming her signature and separating her work from the Skookum dolls. M F Woods started her doll making in the early 1900’s and with her art training in Chicago, she became very interested in the West. She moved West and lived with the tribes on reservations to study the dress, culture and daily lives of the American Indian. American Indian tribes such as the Nez Perce, Umatilla and Cheyenne came alive with her careful making of each doll. Her early faces were painted leather, until she replaced them with light brown crepe paper over a plaster mold she sculpted, more resembling the texture of real skin and lifelike. Every feature of the faces were then delicately painted to give each doll its own personality. Her earliest examples had simple tubular bodies and were stuffed and wrapped with traditional patterned blankets 191223-95 Welcome to Matt Wood's Antique American Indian Art, llc (AAIA) eBay ListingsPlease HIT "SAVE THIS SELLER" in top-right corner of listing if you want notifications of our new listings. As the nation’s leading gallery of Antique North American Indian Art and Artifacts, we invite you to consider the beautiful art and artifacts that we list on eBay with full confidence in the authenticity and legality of the item, in the accuracy of the listing, and in the professionalism that we demonstrate in processing each transaction.
