Description: This is an absolutely unique lot centered around and including the classic book THE INVASION FROM MARS (With the Complete Script of the Orson Welles Broadcast) by Hadley Cantril. The volume included with this lot is the 1952 1st edition, 3rd printing, from the Princeton University Press. As shown in the accompanying photos, the dustcover is present but it has significant damage. As explained below, this book was used as a teaching tool by a university professor, and there are a variety of handwritten notes throughout the book. All of these materials came from the personal library and collections of famed American sociology professor Herbert Hyman. I have included a brief biographical sketch of Dr. Hyman below. In 1964 the publishing house of Harper & Rowe was considering reprinting The Invasion From Mars as part of its "Torchbook" paperback series. On August 28, 1964, Hugh Van Dusen of Harper & Rowe sent this copy of The Invasion From Mars to Dr. Heyman and asked whether Dr. Heyman thought a paperback of the book would be useful for teaching college students. Bot the August 28 1964 letter from Van Dusen and a draft of Dr. Hyman's are included with this lot! Ultimately Harper & Rowe decided to publish the paperback, and on May 2, 1966, Hadley Cantril, the author of The Invasion From Mars, sent Dr. Hyman a note thanking him for helping him get the paperback published and for providing a blurb for the paperback edition. That note, signed by Hadley Cantril, is also included with this lot! In time Dr. Hyman himself would utilize The Invasion From Mars in teaching his college courses, and also included in this lot are two (2) pages of Dr. Hyman's lecture notes about the book and its impact on panic and mass behavior. Finally, this lot also includes an October 1978 clipping from Parade magazine about the original Orson Welles hoax, along with a story from The American Journal of Sociology by Robert E. Forman titled "Resignation As A Collective Behavior Response", also dealing with the Welles hoax. This is an absolutely unique collection of materials.
