Patton Sr., to his son, the eventually decorated WWII general, encapsulates the family life that incubated one of the most outsize personalities of the 20th century. 'Papa' Patton Sr. raised his son on the hagiographic glories of of their military ancestors, most notably the first George Smith Patton, Confederate Colonel killed in the Civil War. Papa carefully crafted his son's imagination with tales of adventure, Knights of the Roundtable, etc., and succeeded in situating his sense of destined grandeur. Pretentions of destiny which, we would note, caused much consternation to Patton while languishing unfulfilled beween wars, and to the men in his charge during his famed campains of WWII.
