Description: This I Remember, published in 1949, is a memoir by Eleanor Roosevelt, who served as the First Lady of the United States during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency. As the second of four memoirs she wrote, this book continues the narrative from where her previous memoir, This Is My Story, left off in the 1920s and extends through to Franklin's death in 1945. Eleanor Roosevelt signed a contract to write this book shortly after his passing. The first edition, published by Harper & Brothers in New York, spans 387 pages and includes historic photographs. This first edition is a blue cloth hardcover limited to 1,000 copies, each specially bound, printed on special paper, numbered, and signed by Eleanor Roosevelt. The copy for sale is numbered #123. An intriguing aspect of this book history is its previous owner, identified in the Ex Libris-sticker as Florence S. Livingston. The Livingston family, originally from Scotland, settled in New York in the 17th century. Notable members of the Livingston family include signers of the Declaration of Independence (Philip Livingston) and the U.S. Constitution (William Livingston). The family’s notable descendants also include Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt herself. While there is no such evidence, it is an intriging possibility that this book was once owned by a member of this distinguished family.
