Description: The Revolt of Asia by Upton Close (Josef Washington Hall). Published in 1927 by G.B. Putnam's Sons, New York. Hardcover, no dust jacket. 325 pages. This copy is SIGNED by Upton Close facing the title page — a large, dramatic signature. Upton Close was the pen name for Josef Washington Hall (1894-1960), a journalist, explorer, and professor at the University of Washington. In this volume, he wrote: "We have come to the time when any prolonged attempt of any race or nation or class or sex to dominate another can only bring destruction to both" (p. 325). Later in life, Close became allied with the America Firsters and isolationists and was an extreme anti-Communist. Of particular historical interest in this volume is Close's detailed discussion of his interview with Mahatma Gandhi (pp. 225-238). He quotes Gandhi: "Every injustice in history has been got rid of through mass disobedience, although historians, obsessed with the theory that it is violent force which makes destiny, have overlooked this greater force...." (p. 228). This copy has condition issues. The text contains intermittent pencil notations, such as brackets and check marks. The cover is faded and smudged. The spine has separated from the book as shown, and needs to be reglued. The fore-edge contains a small pinhole. The original owner wrote his name in pen on the blank page facing the front cover. A promotional write-up about Close is glued to the inside front cover. We have lowered the opening bid to reflect these issues. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
