Description: This antique book titled "The History of Pyrrhus" by Jacob Abbott is a rare find for collectors and history enthusiasts alike. Published in 1854 by Harper & Brothers in New York, this hardcover book is the first edition and features beautiful black and white illustrations/engravings throughout. The book is written in English and covers historical topics, specifically this volume covers the history of Pyrrhus, the king of Epirus. He was a Greek king and statesman of the Hellenistic period. He had also been regarded as one of the greatest generals in antiquity. This particular book is in good preowned condition considering it is a 170 year old antique. There is age related wear and damage in the form of wear to the red cover, particularly along the edges of the book as well as some deterioration at the spine. There is also some age related yellowing/spotting primarily to the first few and last few pages. The interior pages actually look very good for their age and have very little damage except pages 222-225 have notable staining/creasing from being dog eared at the top possibly a century ago. Please see pic. The inside of both the front and back covers have a darkened staining. I do not know what this is from. At first sight I was saddened because i thought it was mold/mildew but the stain does not transfer like mold spores might and I do not sense any type of smell or musty mildew odor so I don't believe it is from that. Could it be from the hardcover's original dye or glue seeping through in some way? Albeit the issues mentioned, the book still remains bound well and I see no torn pages, handwriting/markings, or smell any foul odors. Please review my pics for best reference to the book's condition. This is still a book to be enjoyed for its contents or for the beauty of its antiquity! Please review pics. Item is sold AS IS. "The History of Pyrrhus" is one volume of several historical book volumes by Jacob Abbott and was "designed for the young reader" although the writing style is very maturely written and just as appropriate for adults. Each volume centers on a different historical figure. Please check out my other listings for more antique history book volumes by Jacob Abbott.
