Description: Tempo Uniden 2020 Tempo Uniden 2020 vintage classic ham radio transceiver HF SSB excellent Description Up for sale is a classic vintage Tempo 2020 HF transceiver. This radio was sold during the late Seventies and was Uniden’s flagship ham radio product. It covers all pre-WARC HF bands from 160m to the full 10m band, no extra crystals are needed for the latter. The radio being sold here is in very good condition, hardly any scratches on it, almost mint (see the detailed photos). You will have a tough time finding a nicer one. Also, the insides look perfect and are original, it has not been messed with. The radio being sold here comes with the hard-to-find power cable and original manual. It has a 500 Hz CW filter installed as well. The radio being sold here comes from an estate. The previous owner has treated this radio very well; it has always been stored in a dry, air-conditioned environment and protected from scratches. As a result, it looks almost like new, inside and out, with only some minimal scratches on the top. The front panel is pristine. The radio was not tested by me, because these old radio’s really need to be powered up slowly using a variac transformer which I don’t have. But I have no reason to doubt its functionality. However, you might have to replace a weak electrolytic capacitor here and there, after 50 years, so keep that in mind. Background The Tempo 2020 is an unusual radio that stands out against the competition of the time. For starters, it uses a unique synthesizer concept in which coarse 100kHz increments are generated by a digital PLL synthesizer, but the range within these 100 kHz increments is covered by a traditional VFO. This differs from the competitors of the time having a traditional heterodyne crystal-VFO concept, where the VFO would have to cover a much larger 500 kHz range, which resulted in a compromised over-all frequency stability. The Tempo 2020 synthesizer concept solved this problem. The advantage of the method that the 2020 uses is that PLL phase noise is kept to a minimum, while frequency stability is kept optimal as the VFO only has to cover 100 kHz (instead of the common 500kHz of the time) The frequency display of this radio is also unique: the range within the 100 kHz steps is displayed on a drum representing digital-style characters. Very unique. Another unique feature of this radio is that it has separate USB and LSB crystal filters, meaning the VFO carrier does not have to be shifted 3 kHz when switching from USB to LSB and vice versa. Such method requires two SSB filters instead of one, and that is the (cost) reason that only professional radios of the time used that concept. But Uniden did not mind the extra cost for the 2020, to favor frequency accuracy and tune simplicity. When operating AM, both sideband filters are switched-in for both upper and lower sideband to pass through so the AM sounds very well also on receive. But you have to tune the dial about 200Hz off frequency to allow the carrier to pass as well, otherwise it falls in between the USB and LSB filter slopes. Very unique. Another Tempo 2020 feature is that the PA uses two 6146 octal tubes in parallel. These 6146 tubes (well known amongst radio hams because of their use in Collins equipment), were specially developed by RCA for transmitting purposes and can still easily be found today. Many competitors of the time used sweep (TV) tubes, which are almost impossible to find today, and have a poor linearity. NOT so for the 2020. The radio’s receiver is fully solid-state. The transmitter has two 6146 tubes parallel in the final stage with a driver 12BY7A tube preceding it. The rest of the transmitter stages is solid state. Last but not least, the radio is built modular with edge plug-in cards that plug into a motherboard, like professional radio’s used to have. This makes component replacement for repairs very easy, if ever necessary. To summarize: A very unique piece of vintage equipment, in near-mint condition, fully original and accessories included. Don’t let it slip away now by waiting too long! Shipping and Payment Shipment will be UPS. I’ll include a USPS shipping option for those areas where that is cheaper or if you need to have it shipped to a P.O. Box. Please make sure you select the right shipping method. The unit will be shipped well packed with sufficient bubble wrap padding and fully insured. In the unlikely case that damage occurs during transport we require the buyer to document this properly by immediately taking detailed pictures of the damage of both the item and the shipping box and keep the box for further inspection before a claim can be made. Without submitting these pictures there will not be reimbursement for the damaged shipment. International buyers are welcome but email me for a shipping quote first before you buy. The item will be insured and declared for the full amount. Payment is through PayPal only and needs to be completed within two days after the listing ends. Thanks for watching!
