Description: Sweden of the Forests The long dark sweep of the forest held much of the country in solitude broken only by occasional villages. The peo-ple, 90 percent at least, lived off the land, forestry of a primitive sort, and farming. Poor, they nevertheless had a certain independence growing out of the powers of parliament and the "reduction" of the nobles, whose share of the land was less than 40 percent. This was Sweden in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, much of it on a parallel latitude with Alaska, part of it lying beyond the Arctic Circle. The rugged quality of this northern peninsula has always been a part of my attachment. We stayed in mid-July in a nearly empty ski lodge close to the Norwegian border. On the granite mountains there were still patches of snow. I could hear the echoes of those lines from Shakespeare, during the revels at Elsinore. Old Norway, a sturdy force untouched by the decadence of the Danish court, that was the invocation, the warning for the corrupt king. The sophisticated Sweden, the Sweden of the middle way, was built on that sturdy base with so much of the native root preserved.
