Description: A BRONZE BEAUTY This is a certified 1976 Paris Mint restrike of the very rare original medal celebrating the birth of Napoleon II, which can run $1000 or more, if you can find one. It was struck from the orignal dies and remains in Gem Uncirculated condition. The high relief front displays the laureate bust of Napoleon Bonaparte flanked by that of his young wife, Marie Louise, the Dutchess of Parma. The reverse features Marie Louise standing, holding the child, flanked by an eagel and calf. Exquisite workmanship! Here is your chance to own a magnificent large (42mm) Napoleon medal struck almost a half century ago at the site of its original creation for a fraction of the original's price! This jumbo size high relief bronze medal was engraved by Bertrand Andrieu and struck at the Paris Mint. It beautifully memorializes the birth of Napoleon's first son by his second wife and empress, Marie Lousie, the Dutchess of Parma. Although he divorced Josephine and married Marie Louise by "arrangement" to consolidate his power throughout Europe (her father was Francis, the King of Austria) love did take hold and Marie Louise gave birth to Napoleon II in 1811 to great celebrations during which the latter was anointed King of Rome. Sadly, their love was short-lived. Due to Napoleon's defeat in Russia and at Leipzig Germany he was forced to abdicate in 1814, and his son never achieved his father's glory. For the intriguing story of Marie Louise (& Josephine) after Napoleon's exile see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Louise,_Duchess_of_ParmaThis medal is truly a work of art by Andrieu. Bertrand Andrieu (24 November 1761 – 6 December 1822) was a French engraver of medals. He was born in Bordeaux. In France, he was considered as the restorer of the art, which had declined after the time of Louis XIV. During the last twenty years of his life, the French government commissioned him to undertake every major work of importance.
