Twist is a man who is used to getting what he wants. Enter: Overtkill, a cyborg killing machine who never fails. NOTE: Overtkill was created on an art training video featuring Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Rob Liefeld. When Lee came up with the name "Overkill," Liefeld and McFarlane, using only the name, and within a matter of minutes, came up with the basic design for the character that would soon be known as Overtkill, a major villain in the Image Universe #7 - "Payback!" Christmas Issue – Chris wanders through Dr. Frederick Willheims mansion looking for files on the uncompleted Cy-Gor project. While viewing Dr. Willheims last recorded message, Chris learns that Frederick's devotion was not solely to the simian project as he becomes obsessed with bringing his wife back to life. After surviving a stroke, Dr. Willheim finds he is physically unable to care for Cy-Gor. Chris attempts to leave the mansion, but Cy-Gor finds him first. Meanwhile, Spawn prepares the weapons he stole from the army base for a one-man war against Wynn. Cogliostro warns Spawn that killing Wynn will not solve his problems as Wynn represents only a small piece of the puzzle. Spawn once again visits Grannie Blake. #40 - Direct Edition. "Fugitives: Part 1 of 2!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art and cover by Tony Daniel and Kevin Conrad. Spawn finds several bums messing with his throne who, unbeknownst to Spawn, have booby trapped it. The throne attacks Spawn rendering him useless. Several unknown creatures drive a fork lift right through Spawn and the throne, cover his body with a crate, and cart him off. Meanwhile, Terry and Wanda try to understand Spawns involvement in both the government and their lives. At the same time, a local sheriff investigates the sightings of a big foot type creature, who is actually Cy-Gor, who has slaughtered numerous animals in his path. The police attack Cy-Gor after he mauls one of their dogs. Cy-Gor ends up protecting little Tony before retreating to the safety of the forest. An unconscious Spawn finally awakens and finds himself in the clutches of The Curse who has begun dissecting his body, and is about to remove his brain #41 - Fugitives: Part 2 of 2!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art and cover by Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane. Curse continues his sadistic torture of Spawn. With the physical part complete, he begins to mentally dissect Spawn, searching for the knowledge that will enable him to overpower the master of all evil. Spawns uniform eventually wins the fight to come to life, and reassembles. As Spawn is engulfed by its force, the maniacal Curse lunges for a switch, self-destructing the castle and everything in it. Elsewhere, Cy-Gor continues his journey towards New York City for an as yet undetermined reason. #43 - ."Evil!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art and cover by Greg Capullo and Todd McFarlane. Detectives Burke and Williams, after extensive investigation of Chief of Police Banks, are on the verge of breaking the case wide open. Before they can put the last pieces of the puzzle together, Banks fires them. Now, their hands are forced to take drastic measures, and take his file public. Hearing of this, Wynn orders all support around Banks to be shut down to ensure that banks will take the fall. When the newspaper hits the stands, Banks, with no one willing to help him out, crumbles under the pressure and takes his own life. Meanwhile, Spawn, slowly rejuvenates himself after surviving the Curses experiments on him. Getting stronger every day, he recuperates in solitude as he gradually makes his way back to New York. 32 pages, FC #44 - "Avenger!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art and cover by Tony Daniel and Kevin Conrad. Tiffany, vowing to make a name for herself and take Angela's place as the Priority A-1 angel, knows destroying Spawn ensures her promotion. Meanwhile, Spawn, who was almost destroyed by the Curses experiments, continues to rejuvenate himself. Wild animals help by bringing forth their evil to give life to a hellspawn weakened. As his body slowly grows stronger, Spawn experiences flashbacks of the Curses extractions, and of his love for his wife, Wanda. Tiffany confronts Spawn and is happy to find him in recharge. A fierce battle ensues and Tiffany is just about to decapitate the weakened Spawn… Back in New York, detectives Burke and Williams, after being fired from the precinct, begin to investigate why Banks took the fall when the file they gave to the newspaper indicted several others. 32 pages, FC. Denying defeat, the new angel knows decapitating Spawn will immediately see her promotion to flight level one. A feat never achieved by any angel. Spawns internal neuro-systems release an explosion of pure, malicious energy which taints Tiffany. This attracts the evil animals of the night that come to Spawns defense. It appears that Tiffany has been eaten alive. Meanwhile, back in New York, detective Burke, realizing himself and his partner, Williams, may never be reinstated by the police force, shares with his partner his dream of opening his own detective agency. Wanda visits her doctor learning shes only battling strep throat, and fears that she has passed her cough onto Terry who has been working late every night. Spawn finally returns to New York where he encounters Cog. Cog warns Spawn that he must gain control of his costume. It is morphing too rapidly and if Spawn cannot regain his power as its master, the costume will take ultimate control. 32 pages, FC. NOTE: This issue is dedicated to Jerry Siegel. #50 - "Choices!" Cogliostro explains to Al that if he uses any of his powers it could ultimately lead to him being returned to Hell and Cog reveals that he, too, is a Spawn. Meanwhile, Terry is in the hospital recuperating from the accident where Wanda finds out about Terry's secret doctor visits. When test results reveal that Terry has a malignant brain tumor, Granny Blake asks Al to help him. Als hatred for Terry conflicts with his love for Wanda and his honeymoon promise to keep her happy. After Terry slips into a coma, Al sacrifices his power to restore Terry's health and Wanda's happiness, realizing that Wanda is lost to him forever. The drain of power thrusts Al to Hells second level. Devoid of a purpose for living, Spawn submits to being attacked by vile creatures whose mission is to drain Spawn of his life sustaining necroplasm. Then suddenly, memories of past injustices provoke Al into a rage and he rises to fight again #51 - "Freefall!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art by Todd McFarlane, Greg Capullo and Danny Miki. Cover by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. Spawn free-falls through the levels of Hell where he undergoes a physical and psychological baptism. As the symbiotic costume begins to peel itself from its necroplasmic host, layer after layer of Al Simmons life as it was on earth is peeled away. The weaknesses that damned him are exposed. Finally, to remove the last human vestiges from him, the ruler of the territory rips Al's heart from his necroplasmic body as Malebolgia makes plans for Spawn to take his place as a General in Hells army. Meanwhile, Terry's doctors are still puzzled over his miraculous recovery. Wanda admits she also has difficulty with it while Cyan stubbornly refuses to give up a filthy shoelace (Spawns) she found at the hospital. Elsewhere in the city, Sam introduces Twitch to their new 55 Chevy Crimemobile. 32 pages, FC #58 - "The Orphans!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art by Todd McFarlane, Greg Capullo and Danny Miki. Eddie and Andy, the abused children who killed their father (see Spawn #29), escape the detention center and find their way to New York City in search of their hero, Spawn. There, they are befriended by Snake who offers to employ him courier illegal packages for him. The boys find a hostile Spawn and Andy insists on staying with him in his alley. Believing Spawn a threat to his business, Snake forces Eddie to lead him to spawn where a confrontation ensues. Snake ends up dead and Andy wounded. After seeking medical care, Eddie and Andy voluntarily returned to the detention center. Tainted by their experience, Eddie and Andy are forever stripped of their innocence. #65 - Photo cover - "The Past!" Written by Todd McFarlane. Art by Greg Capullo, Todd McFarlane, and Chance Wolf.
