Description: SHE CAPTURED THE SPIRIT OF PIONEERING NORTH AMERICA WILLA CATHER WAS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY READ American writers in the first half of the 20th Century, noted for her ability to conjure up the spirit and ambience of earlier days on the Great Plains. One of the most popular of her works was - and remains - My Àntonia. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1922 for her novel One of Ours. This novel Shadows on the Rock goes back even earlier to the 17th Century and to a different place for her - Quebec. Shadows on the Rock provides a good example of why her writing has appealed to so many readers. Its focus is more on the characters in the novel rather than on a narrative; readers get to know Cecile Auclair and her father Euclide, French colonists in old Quebec, and her depiction of their actions and thoughts creates a fascinating picture of life at those times and in at that place. THE BOOK ON OFFER HERE IS A VETERAN, THE BETTER PART OF A CENTURY OLD - and it bears the patina of its long existence. The binding is firm and the pages are unmarked and comfortable in their maturity. Nobody committed the ghastly sins of bending the page ends to mark a place or of underlining an appealing passage - and there are no names or inscriptions. The dust-jacket is good and has been spruced up with a removable Gaylord plastic cover. The boards are a bit grubby (see the picture above) and the book has that reassuring smell of a creaky old book store. It was published in 1931. An inside page proclaims that it was in "First and Second Printings before Publication". You don't often see that. It means that the publishers sold more advance copies to booksellers than they had printed. So they rolled out more copies. Thus it is not a First Edition though it is an early edition. We think it is worth about $42.00. If you disagree and want to offer something else, go ahead and make the offer. We will consider it. Publisher: Alfred A.
