Description: Here's a very special book. It's an octavo-sized (8 inch by 6 inch) 1895 Macmillan & Co. edition of Fitzgerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The interior is in excellent shape. If you're looking at this listing, however, it's the binding that you'll be interested in. This is a very very beautiful Sangorski & Sutcliffe in fine condition. Cover has basketweave blind-stamping, gilt rules, gilt flowers, all against gorgeous light tan calf leather. Spine has raised bands, intricate giltwork, and gilt moon and star patterns. The custom endpapers, which repeat the moon motif from the spine, are also used on the binder's custom slipcase. All edges gilt. I note a couple of very light spots of wear to the spine (see photos), but they are extremely minor. Contains armorial bookplate and nameplate of historian and author Herbert J. Mueller. A very luxurious fine binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, in collector’s condition.
