Description: THE RULES OF THE GAME by JEAN RENOIR The CRITERION COLLECTION, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films BLACK & WHITE Running time approximately 106 minutes LANGUAGE: French SUBTITLES: English Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Renoir's masterpiece THE RULES OF THE GAME (LA REGLE DU JEU) is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners. Amorous intrigue abounds at a weekend hunting party, where the refusal of one of the guests to play by the class-based rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy. Although the original negative was destroyed during World War II, this edition features the fully reconstructed version embraced by audiences and critics around the world as a timeless representation of Jean Renoir's genius. A bourgeois life in France at the onset of World War II, as the rich and poor servants meet up at a French chateau. On the brink of World War II, the record-breaking aviator, Andre Jurieux, safely lands at a small airport crammed with reporters, only to come face-to-face with his worst fear -- the object of his desire, Christine, a blonde noblewoman and wife of the affluent Marquis de la Cheyniest, is not there to greet him. Intent on winning her back, Andre accepts his friend's Octave's invitation for a lavish hunting weekend at the aristocrat's palatial country estate at La Coliniere, among hand-picked guests and the mansion's servants. However, intrigue, rivalries and human weaknesses threaten to expose royalty and paupers alike. The refusal of one of the guests to play by society's rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy.
