He lives and works in Granada, Nicaragua.Maya was born in the municipality of Florida, Camagüey province, Cuba in 1969 in a very humble family. His mother was a cleaning assistant and his father a mechanic. There is no artistic family background, the only surrounding creative influence was the embroidery of his grandmother Maria. His beginnings in art are self-taught until he met teacher Elsa Castro in the city of Villa Clara, from whom he learned the basic concepts of drawing and painting."Maya has stated that Wilfredo Lam, Oswaldo Guayasamin, Rufino Tamayo, Cundo Bermúdez, Pablo Picasso, and Juan Gris have influenced his work.
