All are Invited to Attend.” RARE PRE-CIVIL WAR LETTERPRESS BROADSIDE FOR A “REPUBLICAN MEETING!” ADDRESSED BY CONGRESSMAN THOMAS M. EDWARDS LEADING UP TO THE 1860 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION The Republican party was originally a coalition of ex-Whigs, ex-Free Soilers, and others opposed to slavery formed in 1854. Although they lost the 1856 presidential election, in part to a split vote with Know Nothing and Whig coalition candidate Millard Fillmore, they gained political ground in congressional and local elections. The party was electrified in preparation for the 1860 election, with the party organizing political meetings across the county, such as the one advertised here. Although published in the lead-up to the 1860 presidential election, the broadside is one of the earliest advertisements to raise awareness about the new and rising Republican Party. ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS LIKELY A MAJOR TOPIC OF DISCUSSION SINCE EDWARDS PERSONALLY KNEW LINCOLN AND WAS ONE OF HIS BIGGEST ALLIES IN NEW ENGLAND Congressman Thomas M. Edwards of New Hampshire personally knew Abraham Lincoln through his single term in the U.S. House of Representatives and was one of his biggest allies in New England. In addition, Lincoln received national attention following his 1858 Senate campaign debates against Stephen A. Douglas and his recent speech at Cooper Union. Lincoln was likely a major topic of discussion at the present meeting and he would go on to win New Hampshire in the 1860 Republican National Convention and presidential election.
