Description: Rare Pamphlet In Sequoyan Syllabary, Cherokee Language / The Shorter Catechism, by Reverend Amory Nelson Chamberlin, Translator and Printer, 11 sheets, four pages per sheet, for a total of 44 pages, unbound, some pages are bright with dark text, others are toned somewhat but still quite legible. This is an exceptionally scarce Cherokee language imprint from Vinita, Indian Territory, which was later Oklahoma. The Reverend Chamberlin went to Pheasant Hill mission, in what is now Craig County, in 1868, several years before Vinita came into existence. He printed his own translations of religious matter on a crude press and distributed them among the Native Americans as part of his missionary work for the Presbyterian Church. The Chieftain Newspaper began around 1882. Not in Hargrett. This item was apparently never issued.
