Description: This is an incredible solid wood hand carved bust statue of Spain's King Alfonso XIII. Born in 1886, this piece was likely created around late 1880s. As the sole male heir of the time, he was born as King and was under regency until his teenage years. As commemorative piece of birth and symbol of Spain, this bust would have likely been displayed in a prominent public place within Spain or its territories. It may have also been commissioned by a person of high ranking society, as the quality is very good. The bust has amazing lifelike features and crisp details. Multicolor polychrome paint has been applied and polished. There is a handwritten name of "Alfosno XIII" written on the chest. The bust is mounted to a stand that is dark wood with intricate patterns and compliments the work nicely. Measures 11.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide and 5.75 inches deep. Good condition with signs of surface wear and few minor losses, please review the high resolution photos to further assess condition. The last photo shows a montage of stamps and currency of the time that helps confirm the likeness of the bust as Alfonso. Shipping includes insured signature delivery service. He was a monarch from birth as his father, Alfonso XII, had died the previous year. Alfonso's mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as regent until he assumed full powers on his sixteenth birthday in 1902. During World War I, because of his family connections with both sides and the division of popular opinion, Spain remained neutral. The King established an office for assistance to prisoners of war on all sides. This office used the Spanish diplomatic and military network abroad to intercede for thousands of POWs. His efforts with the European War Office during World War I, earned him a nomination the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917, which was ultimately won by the Red Cross. To date, he is the only monarch that had been nominated for a Nobel Prize. Check out my other antique listings.
