Commentary (excerpt) He remained at the top for a long time, and it was said that no one could surpass him as a big band drummer. In this way, the thirteen stars are all impressive individuals, and they truly demonstrate their skills, delivering outstanding performances. "Overtime" was composed and arranged by Pete Rugolo, composer and arranger for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. It's a bebop number. The performance begins with an intro where solos are exchanged in two-bar segments in the order of alto, trumpet, tenor trombone, clarinet, and pace, all at a fast tempo. The first chorus is a unison ensemble, followed by Charlie Parker (alto), Kai Winding (trombone), Buddy DeFranco, and Lennie Tristano, each star showcasing their best in sixteen-bar solos. The performance continues with four-bar segments of ensemble, bass, ensemble, and drums, leading to Ventura's solo. The excitement builds up with an ensemble part, followed by Bauer's smart guitar solo and Navarro's trumpet solo, culminating in a unison ensemble. "Victory Ball" is a modern-style combo piece composed by pianist Lennie Tristano. Here, Navarro, Davis, J.J. Johnson, and Ernie Caceres are absent, leaving the remaining eight to perform. The opening is a harmonized ensemble, with the chorus handled by Charlie Parker. In this ensemble chorus, Tristano's unique and unusual phrasing is interesting. Following that are sixteen-bar solos by Parker, DeFranco, Kai Winding, Ventura, Tristano, and Gillespie (muted), followed by the final chorus, a harmonic ensemble where Parker again handles the chorus. In this last chorus, Bauer's guitar joins the ensemble, delivering a brilliant performance. Kaoru Nogawa All my products are 100% Authentic.
