William Stone was a noted biographer of Indian chiefs and delivered the bulk of this discourse in Norwich, Connecticut on July 4, 1842 on the occasion of the dedication of a monument to Uncas. Uncas was the first chief of the Mohegans encountered by British settlers in Connecticut. An appendix contains a general history of the Indians of New England, including the Pequots.
