Description: Rachel Reckitt Stepney Letters 1940-1941 Hardcover 1991 Rare Limited UK WWII Rachel Reckitt was a modernist painter, sculptor and printmaker who trained at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. In 1940, she came to London from her family home in Somerset to volunteer for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau at Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, helping to re-house and evacuate bombed out families in the London Borough of Stepney. She also turned her family home in Somerset, 'Golsoncott', into a war nursery for evacuee infants, and regularly wrote letters home, describing the Stepney authorities' sometimes disorganised handling of relief support. Correspondence to her mother describing her wartime experiences was privately published, as Stepney Letters. Covers are hard board (not know if this had a dust jacket as very little anywhere regarding the book's publication) Pages are excellent, near fine, clean, unmarked This book appears to have been made for private circulation to family members by her sister and the slim volume is signed in fountain pen to the Preface Page by B N Reckitt. This is the only copy that appears to be for sale on any platform. Found in Western Australia at an Estate Sale. Condition DisclaimerPhotographs are of the actual listed book you will receive.
