Description: Staffordshire Childs Red Toy Tea Set Biscuit Barrel PUNCH & JUDY Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This is a childs toy biscuit jar or lidded sugar, circa 1890, originally part of a complete childs tea set for doll house tea parties. The doll size jar is round, melon-shaped standing 4-1/2 inches tall, decorated in a rich cherry or country red. The set features the iconic characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. Also shown are Mr and Mrs Frog. The pattern name is "Punch", made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. This set is in very good overall condition, with a firing separation on one handle, original to the making, but no chips cracks or repairs. Light overall glaze crazing consistent with age. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are off center, misplaced or not all aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as is, as shown. A fantastic cookie jar! Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, particularly in this great shade of red. These amusing tea set pieces will make a nice addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia.
