Introduced in 1950, the 400 model with a green striped barrel became a distinctive symbol, a hallmark of pens bearing the Pelikan logo. In the 1980s, series decorated with the stripe pattern were given the name Souverän. The production of the distinctive striped bodies is labour-intensive. It is made using an old technique familiar to Pelikan craftsmen. The raw material is subjected to a number of processes before the desired striped pattern is achieved and then the appropriate shape is formed. The whole is cut and ground with a diamond and completed with the characteristic double rings. The production of the Souverän collection requires the application of precision for perfect results.
