Description: The composition is great. The subject rests on a step with her feet resting on the next step down while the gown flows further downing in a beautiful splay of concentric curves along the flow of her body down to the ground or third step. Beautiful white highlights adorn her gown and white chalk is applied in an artful way against her beautiful dark hair pinned up with the curls creating luscious movement. Here we see a lovely woman seated leaning to one side with her head leaning on her right hand and her left arm resting on the left knee with that hand holding on to some of the simple yet elegant fabric that makes up her garb. Where her hips lay upon the bench the material forms almost concentric circles and it flows down toward her lower extremities. The robe goes downward beyond her legs giving an added nice extension to the composition. There a many white highlights too her dress and to the background silhouetting parts of her pose. The artist was a great western artist too. Here he is able to use the composition elements that he would normally use with western landscapes to carry the eye from the face down along the circuitous fabric and the back up making the whole figure the subject to be taken in. Born in 1845 the artist would have done this work when he was 57 years of age. I'll always wonder about later when he was part of the "Eucalyptus Grove" or "Artists' Alley" time that Rockwell, Reed, Wilkenson Smith, & Frank Johnson , Borg, & Wendt etc who influenced who. Here is a lovely slightly sexy image of a woman in a long flowing white dress by listed artist Frank Tenney Johnson. He was known for his amourasness toward women and some thought him not as hard working as he could be. His wife was a bit tense and that could be why.The year it was done was 1902 or 1905, can't be sure of the date written next to the signature "FT Johnson". This matches up with other signatures from auction sales. The size of the image is 11" by 17" without the matting & frame and with the frame 19" x 24". I will take into consideration the tear in the paper and the losses on the frame in considering an offer. Artist Info: Born near Big Grove, Iowa, Frank Tenney Johnson, became one of the most famous early 20th-century painters of Western genre. He was raised on a farm on the old Overland Trail where he observed western migration of people on horseback, in stage coaches, and in covered wagons. At age of 10, he moved with his family to Milwaukee, and he apprenticed there to panorama painter F.W. Heine (1845-1921), whose specialty was painting horses. From that time, Johnson was ever studying the horse and became noted for his ability to portray it accurately. Then he studied with Richard Lorenz, a member of the Society of Western Painters, and he gave Johnson valuable techniques as well as great enthusiasm for the West.
