Description: For sale is a pair of mid century modern repoussé hammered copper and wood lamp bases attributed to French artist and sculptor Albert Gilles (1895 - 1979) The near pair of lamp bases with the identical octagonal body with a chipped wood style edge and base. The central body with repousseé copper designs of allegorical figures with animals and urns. The lamp with the partial nude female allegorical figure having the Albert Gilles signature stamp on both sides(see pics) near her foot. The male figure with goats having the signature near the goat and his foot to the bottom right (see pics). Condition: The wood was somewhat sunbleached, and we went over it with some wood restorer. Age appropriate wear. Some scuffs and dings. The copper panels being in rather good condition also with normal surface wear for age. Some shellac surface loss to one of brass tubular support elements. The brown electric cords appearing to be original to each lamp and are untested. We always recommend replacing with new updated electrical cords and light sockets for safety and code. These are without the shades. You can add your own shades that match the Decour of your home. Albert Gilles (1895-1979) was a French copper smith. He was born in Paris and mastered the art of sheet metal embossing at a young age before crossing the Atlantic ocean in the 1930`s to ply his trade in North America. Gilles`clientele included Walt Disney, Pope Pius XII, and numerous churches in North America. His family carries on his work today, and they have a museum in Chateau-Richer near Quebec City, which showcases Gilles` and the family`s works. Albert Gilles was one of the main designers who helped design and repair the copper roofing of Chateau Frontenac.
