Description: The early villages of pre-Columbian Mexico, including Ttatilco, were in the central valley just outside Mexico City. This beautiful female figure is from this culture which thrived between 1500 – 600 BC. Their inhabitants lived simple lives in an idyllic setting. With sunny warm weather, the lakes provided plenty of fish and the surrounding forests plenty of game. The most beautiful figurines and pottery have been found in this society. Ttatilco figurines show a great variety of happy people, with musicians, acrobats and dancers. Delicately made from the clay that abounds that region, animals were also represented. Most important in this society are the numerous female figurines; all slim wasted, with small breasts, wide hips and large thighs. The bodies are simplified, but the heads are exquisitely molded with elaborate headdresses and long tails falling over the torso. Later called “pretty ladies” by archeologists, female figurines were buried in tombs to accompany the dead in their journey to the afterlife. This ceramic effigy, is no exception to the traits of the “pretty ladies” of Ttatilco, which was later influenced by the Olmec style of ceramics. It has a pretty turban on top of its head, wide, almond oriental shaped eyes, a delicately carved fine and slender nose, and jaguar-like mouth. A true masterpiece over 2,000 years old. Metal stand included.
