Description: In 1880, Anson Mills signed a lucrative 5 year contract with Winchester Arms to produce the famous dog's head sportsman's plate. Following the Mills Pattern of 1887 "H Plate" design (based on their military contract), these plates and Mills patent woven fabric belt were sold to the sporting community from the 1880s through the first decade of the 20th Century. The catch is fairly marked with the manufacturers information: "Anson Mills Pat. Feb. 1, 81". This is a much abbreviated mark, as the one you typically see has the company address included. This one was looped for 12 Guage shotgun shells, and also has the original attachment hooks present - something often missing. This would be perfect to display with any antique shotgun of the period, as well as any display that reflects the woodsman from the days of Nessmuk or George Washington Sears. The belt remains in fair condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. The plate shows heavy age patina, with typical signs of wear. The belt shows corrosion of metal components, verdigris and heavy wear, soiling and fading. Numerous areas where the woven fabric has frayed. Please see the pictures for more detail. Guaranteed 100% authentic in every respect for life. Be sure to see our other listing for more historical antiques and militaria. Be sure to follow our store as new inventory is added daily.
