Description: Old Watercolor Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this old, unframed watercolor painting attributed to the listed California artist, Esther Hunt. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This painting depicts a Chinese child, wearing a robe and sandals, in the act of lighting outdoor Chinese lanterns in a fenced yard. The painting is on thick watercolor paper. It measures approximately 21 1/16 inches by 12 13/16 inches. This would be a fine addition to a collection of fine art. Identification This unsigned piece is attributed to the listed artist, Esther Anna Hunt (1875-1951). It is old, either vintage or antique, but the exact age is not known. Per Edan Hughes' Artists in California 1786-1940, and askART, Hunt was born in Grand Island, Nebraska. She moved to San Diego in 1881, and there she grew up on a ranch. She worked as an artist in Los Angeles from 1896 to 1900. In 1901, she was living in San Francisco, where she studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute. In order to pay for her art studies, Hunt began painting Chinatown subjects; these were sent to a dealer in New York dealer who sold them. From 1905 to 1906, she studied portraiture with William Merritt Chase in New York City. Afterwards, Hunt continued her art studies for six years in Paris. A portrait that she painted of her sister hung in the Paris Salon while she was there. Hunt returned to California, where she kept a studio in Los Angeles for four years. From 1918 to 1927, she lived in San Francisco; then, during 1927 to 1931, she lived in Greenwich Village in New York City. Hunt was in San Francisco again from 1932 to 1946. She created oils paintings, watercolors, etchings, and ceramic figurines, which were very popular. Children were one of her favorite subjects, even though she did not have any children of her own. Some of her pieces were commercially reproduced for postcards, calendars, prints, and busts. She passed away in Santa Ana, California. Hunt was a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association. She exhibited at American Watercolor Society in 1908, Detroit Museum in 1909, Panama California Exposition in San Diego in 1915 (where she received a gold medal, and San Francisco Art Association in 1916. The works of Hunt are held in the California Historical Society. Condition This unframed painting looks good overall, as shown. There are some tiny pin holes at the corners. There are a few tiny brown dots to the sky area. The top and bottom edges have some short (about 1/4 inch or less) tears. There is minor bending at the corners and edges, and there is some darkening to the paper at the edges. Near the lower left corner, but about 1/1 2 inches from the edges, there is a small (about 3/4 inch long) rip to the paper; this is visible at the left side of Photo 5, and at the lower right of Photo 6. The back side is somewhat yellowed, with some small stains, as shown. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
