Description: Title of the map: "L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE ou se remarquent LES ETATS-UNIS, Par M. Brion de la Tour, Ingénieur-Géographe du Roi A PARIS Chez Esnauts et Rapilly rue St Jacques à la ville de Coutances Avec Priv. du Roi 1779". Unusual large antique copper engraved map of North America, by Louis BRION DE LA TOUR (1743-1803). This is a rare example 1st state of Louis Brion de la Tour's 1779 map of North America during the American Revolution, considered as one of the first maps to name the United States, and published a year following France and the United States's Treaty of Alliance. This map was preceded by J.B. Eliot's 1778 map of the United States (often considered the first map to name the United States), the 1778 reissue of Robert de Vaugondy’s map of Canada, and presumably others. Brion De la Tour printed two other states of this map, in 1783 and in 1788, which are scarce but more common, and this first state is much rarer. Louis Brion de La Tour is a French geographer. His official title was « Ingénieur Géographe du Roi. Although he was a prolific geographer, very little is known of his life or his career. His life passed in scientific work. However what is known is that an important part of his work was done in collaboration with Louis Charles Desnos (1750–1790), bookseller and geographical engineer for globes and spheres of His Danish Majesty.
