Description: During the Chinese Song, Ming, and Quing Dynasties, there was a cultural fascination with archaic bronzes and brass used for food, wine, and ritual purposes. For example, these vessels evolved from simple to more intricate designs. This ancient bronze bowl with brass pedestal was recently acquired from a prominent Bostonian estate of Asian antiques. It appears to be from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) because of its characteristics and markings throughout this vessel. On the bottom of the bowl is the Ming Dynasty era mark. It is unknown if its original purpose was to store food or was used in ritual ceremonies, or both. The Bronze Bowl: There are several repeating etched and carved repeating patterns on the outside of the bowl. Near the top lip of the bowl, a repeating pattern of clouds and large swirls. Underneath this pattern are double etched lines. Underneath this pattern is a repeating pattern of etched lines. Underneath the repeating patterns are two magnificent etched and carved dragons with mouths open facing each other. A flaming sun with a double happiness chop mark is between the dragon faces. Between each dragon front and back legs is a large carved chop mark whose meaning is long life. Amongst the dragons is a landscape of flowers, birds, clouds, and other symbolic etchings. Underneath the landscape and dragons are repeating patterns of etched lines. Patina and oxidation on the bowl: The inside of the bowl is completely covered in patina and oxidation. The outside of the bowl has patina and oxidation throughout. The bottom of the bowl has patina and oxidation amongst the dragons and chop mark. The bottom of the bronze bowl is attached to a base pedestal: Two magnificent etched and carved dragons with mouths open face each other with their bodies forming a circle. In the center of this circle are Chinese chop marks from the Ming dynasty.
