Description: A mid 19th century political silk flag inscribed "The Same Old Coon, Henry Clay”. Although never President, Henry Clay (1777-1852) dominated the American political landscape in the first half of the nineteenth century and remains one of the most influential men in Antebellum America. In an era of shifting factions, he stayed true to his nationalistic ideals throughout his entire career, even as his political party changed from Democratic-Republican to National-Republican to finally Whig. This flag or banner features the nose-thumbing raccoon, first introduced as the Whig Party symbol in 1840, perched on a fence while the man-in-the-moon smiles overhead. A campaign ditty below reads: "The moon was shining silver bright,The stars with glory crowned the night,High on a rail 'that same old coon',Was singing to himself this tune, Clare de kitchen - Hurrah! Hurrah!,For Henry Clay!" Good overall condition, with some staining, minor rips and border losses, as well as old yellowed tape remnants. A great piece of 19th century American political memorabilia!
