Description: Out of a magnificent, antique typewriter collection from Purdue University comes this Merritt Index Typewriter, serial #7585 circa: 1899. The collection was assembled in the 1960s and none of the machines have been on the market until now. The entire collection is now on display and available for purchase at Branford House Antiques. An index typewriter invented by M.G.Merritt and manufactured by the Merritt Manufacturing Company of Springfield, MA. It was introduced in 1899. It is thought to be the only typewriter to use printers’ type organized in a channel on sliding bar. It is inked by rollers which can be refilled or easily replaced. This machine is in good condition and in good working order. We are estimating its condition rating at 2,2.
