As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 86,333, up from 78,958 in 2010. Incorporated on April 1, 1889. Galen Clark School, known as Westside School, was built in 1923 at 632 W. 13th Street between N and M Streets. This building is now the headquarters of Merced County Courthouse Museum and was renamed early this year. Galen Clark (March 28, 1814 – March 24, 1910) was a British North America-born American conservationist and writer. He is known as the first European American to discover the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia trees and is notable for his role in gaining legislation to protect it and the Yosemite area, and for 24 years serving as Guardian of Yosemite National Park.
