Description: This is an attractive 2000 hardcover edition of William Spavens' "Memoirs of a Seafaring Life." This is a Folio (U.K.) edition, based upon the original 1796 edition, in which Mr. Spavens recounted his time as a sailor in the 1750s and 1760s. This book comes with an illustrated slipcase (please refer to the photos). Illustrations for the book are taken from a sketchbook of artist Gabriel Bray, kept whilst on board the HMS Pallas in the 1770s. An Introduction is provided by historian Nicholas A.M. Rodger (Oxford University), who writes that "Far from being a flat recital of successive events, this is a real work of literature, which brings vividly to life a gallery of picaresque characters, not least the author himself, the resourceful young seaman who saw the world and, in middle age, had the skill and wit to recreate it on paper." There is a long and fascinating chapter titled "A Brief Description of Several Countries" in which the author provides an eyewitness account of his travels to, and observations regarding, many countries over 250 years ago.
