Tice (1903 – 1969) and Howard K. Case (1897 – 1970). He was raised in Geddes (a small town located just west of Syracuse) and later in Binghamton, New York where his father was employed as a toolmaker. At birth Case was named “Malcom” not “Malcolm” as is incorrectly reported in some instances. He attended Binghamton North High School, graduating in 1942, and worked early in his career at the Hills, Mclean & Haskins Department Store in Binghamton. Following high school, Case attended the Rhode Island School of Design (1942-45), majoring in fashion design, where he was the very first man to receive a degree in costume design from the school. After graduation from RISD, Case did design work for the noted women fashion designers Sally Milgrim (1898 – 1994) and Emily Wilkens (1917 – 2000). In 1947 he founded his own design label, Malcolm Originals, a name under which he worked under through 1949. During the latter part of that year, he traveled through Europe (Florence, London, Milan, Paris, Rome, Venice) painting and doing research on textile design, returning to New York in December. In 1950 Case received a commission through Marshall Fields (probably through their art department) to create a series of watercolors for Hilton Hotels. And in 1952 and 1953 his holiday designs were chosen for the Book-of-the-Month Club’s Christmas card series. During this period, he was heavily involved in the Greenwich Village art scene and exhibited with the Village Art Center and at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibitions in New York City. At the time he was residing at 471 W. 21 st Street in the city. He purchased his first home in East Hampton in the Hamlet of Springs on Copeces Lane in 1958, which was used primarily during the summer months. Within a few years he was living in East Hampton full-time, and in 1961 he opened his own gift and design store at 33-A Main Street named Malcom Edgar Case, Inc., which primarily offered clothing and decorative objects for sale to the public. In 1968 Case moved his studio and residence to Surf Drive, where later in his life he became known for his large variety of award-winning jams and preserves, a skill he had learned from his grandmother. Malcom Edgar Case died of a heart attack in East Hampton, New York, on Wednesday, the 21st of March 1984 at the age of sixty years. His service was held on March 31 st from St. John’s Church in Southampton, New York. He was cremated and therefore has no burial location. Though there are undoubtedly other exhibitions in which Case participated, those presently known include the following: Broome County Art Fair, Binghamton, NY, 1941; Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibition, New York, NY, 1947, 1951, 1953; Baltimore National Water Color Exhibition, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, 1949; Roko Gallery, New York, NY, 1951; Gallery Exhibition, Bucks County, PA, 1951 (solo); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, 1952; Brooklyn Juvenile Guidance Center Exhibition at the Heights Casino, Brooklyn, NY, 1953; Copain Gallery, New York, NY, 1953 (solo); Village Art Center, New York, NY, 1955; Village Art Center Show at the State Capitol Galleries, Baton Rouge, LA, 1957; Out of This World Inn, East Hampton, NY, 1960 (solo); Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, NY, 1961; Newpher Exhibition at The George Washington University Library, Washington, D.C., 1965; Gurney’s Inn, Montauk, NY, 1974; Artists of the Region, A Guild Hall Traveling Exhibition (various locations), 1975; John Harmon Gallery, New York, NY, 1977; Water Mill Museum, Water Mill, NY, 1978 (solo); East End Arts & Humanities Council, EastHampton, NY, 1978 (prize), 1982; Gallery East, East Hampton, NY, 1979 (solo).
