Description: The world renown pottery from The Armenian Ceramics in Jerusalem The story of the Balians and Karakashian families been brought to jerusalem in the 1920s from Turkey to help with important tile restoration at the dome of the rock is well documented, these highly skilled generational potters and decorators decided to stay after the work was done hand produce thier own ceramics, again well documented the issues that region has suffered, these families manage to survive and continue to work through very hard times. Marie Balian Wife of Setrak Balian is a world renown painter in her own right, have had solo exibitions at the likes of the Smithsonian Washington Dc. The partnership had been in existance from 1922 - 1965 when Karakashian moved to start thier own independant firm and the Balian family contiued at the Nablus Road Site. Importantly this bowl carries an unusual signature, well maybe not unusual but one I do not recognise, the Armenian alphabet doesnt really help me here, i would assume its a karakashian mark but there were other potters working in and around jerusalem of Turkish and possibly Armenian decent at this time. This simple but beautiful oblong plate shows within the design the two birds opposite each other, this is a representation of seasons in islamic art, the one on the left is spring and the one on the right autumn, a popular motif. 8 3/4" long x 4 1/4" Wide I can see some crazing to the glaze and a small spot of fired clay in one corner that is slightly raised, the rest of the plate appears to carry no damage. This is a very rare surviving piece from that period of production. Fully signed to the base with the Jerusalem location.
