Description: 1884 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN MEDAL DEWITT JGB-1884-5 WM NGC MS 62 I PURCHASED THIS AND TWO OTHER 1884 BLAINE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN MEDALS ON EBAY FROM A SELLER THAT SAID THEY WERE A DESCENDANT OF VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE LOGAN. THERE ARE ONLY (7) OF THIS WHITE METAL TYPE LISTED IN THE NGC CENSUS AS OF 9/2023. THIS TYPE IS SHOWN IN THE REFERENCE BOOK AS ALSO MADE IN COPPER. THERE ARE NO COPPER EXAMPLES LISTED IN THE NGC CENSUS. THE ONLY EXAMPLE THAT I CAN FIND THAT HAS SOLD INDIVIDUALLY IN A MAJOR AUCTION WAS AN UNGRADED MINT STATE EXAMPLE WITH A PIN AND RIBBON ATTACHED THAT WAS IN THE JOHN J. FORD COLLECTION. STACKS BOWERS SOLD THIS EXAMPLE IN 2013 FOR $793.13. James Gillespie Blaine (January 31, 1830 January 27, 1893) was an American statesman and Republican politician who represented Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, serving as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1869 to 1875, and then in the United States Senate from 1876 to 1881. Blaine twice served as Secretary of State (1881, 18891892), one of only two persons to hold the position under three separate presidents (the other being Daniel Webster), and unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President in 1876 and 1880 before being nominated in 1884. In the general election, he was narrowly defeated by Democrat Grover Cleveland. Blaine was one of the late 19th century's leading Republicans and champion of the moderate reformist faction of the party known as the "Half-Breeds". MY NGC REGISTRY SET "BRUCE THOMAS COLLECTION OF SO-CALLED DOLLARS AND OTHER MEDALS"WAS VOTED AS THE BEST CUSTOM SET FOR 2018 BY THE NGC REGISTRY AWARDS.
