Description: Wood Frame / Crushed baby blue velvet / 15" X 21" X 1" SHADOW BOX Also comes with Narrative (Story) about how the song came about (See narrative in listing photos) After the 70’s were over and everyone was putting away their disco balls, Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees began writing and producing songs for other artists. “Islands in the Stream,” was named after an Ernest Hemingway novel and little known by the general public – was actually written for Marvin Gaye. Barry Gibb who actually wrote the song but later gave writing credits to the entire Gibb clan: himself and brothers Maurice and Robin. Barry realized after writing it that it wasn’t a good fit for Marvin. At the time, he didn’t know that Marvin would meet a tragic end in less than a year – shot by his father after an altercation. And this mega hit by two upper-tier country music stars, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton would surely have overwhelmed the “Let’s Get it on” Marvin Gaye’s version, or so I believe. SO HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED: Barry Gibb was already producing an album for Kenny Rogers – Eyes That See in the Dark, so he offered “…Islands” to “The Gambler.” After listening to the recording for several days, Kenny told Barry (quoted by People Magazine), “ ‘Barry, I don’t even like this song anymore’ and he said, ‘You know what we need? We need Dolly Parton.’ Once she came in and started singing, the song was never the same. It took on a personality of its own.” Dolly was already at the RCA studios when Barry suggested she might sing on the song. Kenny’s manager, Ken Kragen, went downstairs and asked if she would be willing to make the song a duet with Kenny, and the rest is history. Big time music history. When it was released, Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart which had been enjoying the No. 1 spot on the ALL GENRE Billboard Hot 100 charts lost her seat in the big time “musical chairs” game, and “Islands” hit #1 everywhere. Pop, Country, Adult Contemporary. Since this award was made by my father, Ken Kittinger after its FIRST Platinum certification, it was recertified at two million and remember that RIAA Platinum certifications are for U.S. sales only and do not count sales worldwide. Millions more have been sold globally.PACKED IN CUSTOM PACKAGING WITH LOTS OF BUBBLE WRAP & STYROFOAM.
