Description: MARVEL COMICS In this Issue: IRON MAN and DOCTOR DOOM have been summoned 100 years into the future to face a threat that may destroy the utopia of New Camelot. But, can even the combined might of Iron Man and Doctor Doom stand against their future selves? Marvel StudiosMarvel Cinematic Universe MCU Key Comic BookAVENGERS: DOOMSDAY (2025) While Marvel Studios won't be sending Robert Downey Jr -- as any character he has, is, or might play or has played -- to a Camelot-like Earth somewhere in the vast Marvel Multiverse, writer David Michelinie and artist Bob Layton's well-known IRON MAN and DOCTOR DOOM team-up story from Iron Man #250 (1989) has earned the reputation it has for a reason, or even a couple of them. One of those reasons is that Michelinie and Layton's "Camelot" story is something of a sequel to the "Camelot" story and Iron Man / Doom team-up from Iron Man #150 (1981), which happened to also be written and illustrated by Michelinie and Layton. Yes, it's a rare thing a creative team can do their own anniversary issue and revisit a story they both published 100 issues earlier, but they did and definitely took advantage of the opportunity. But where Issue #150 sends both Iron characters to a Camelot in the distant past, Issue #250 propels both men to a Camelot in the distant future -- and in an alternate timeline. In this future, they meet future versions of themselves while assisting MERLIN to put King Arthur back on the throne. Perhaps a reason that better fits the interests of us Modern Age MCU Doctor Doom fans is that the team-up story offers great (but not perfect) characterization of both Iron Man and Doom, allowing readers to see differences and similarities between the two and thus gain an understanding of their greater meta-textual "relationship." Just as all the best heroes and villains are like opposite sides of the same coin in both obvious and non-obvious ways, the same can be said for Marvel's two Iron Men. Marvel Studios' was able to illustrate that point far more literally / meta-textually than any Marvel comic book could ever do, by having RDJ, the former Iron Man actor, return to play Doctor Doom. The similarities and differences between the characters are highlighted by the actor himself, embodying with his physical real self all the metaphorical concepts that, in comics, have to be conveyed in other ways. If we haven't confused the hell out of you, then awesome...because we confused ourselves more than we were just four paragraphs ago. And if we did confuse you, at least you know you're not alone in that confusion. As one confused Marvel fan to another, take my advice and go give your collection what it deserves...today!
