The Rosensteel collection of artifacts are not recent recoveries, and pre-date the 1960s. They are not unlimited and when they are sold out, we cannot replace them. The park still owns the majority of the relics once owned by the Rosensteel Family. THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA - A VERY RARE LOCATION IN LIMITED NUMBERS - RECOVERED AT 'THE SLAUGHTER PEN' - DEVIL'S DEN (Specifically the Devil's Den Parking Lot to the North-Western Slope of Big Round Top) - FROM THE ROSENSTEEL FAMILY COLLECTION - 3 unknown iron relics, including what appears to be a nail or staple section, and 2 unknown sections of flat iron bands? They appear to be period, and were recovered from a very important battlefield location. These artifacts were recovered at Devil's Den in the area between the now famous battlefield landmark of Devil's Den and its parking lot, and Big Round Top. This area is often referred to as the Slaughter Pen, which is where many of the July 2 Confederate dead were photographed. This artifact was a part of the collection of Iva Rosensteel-Rider (Born in 1887 and died in 1964), sister of George Rosensteel (founder of the Gettysburg National Museum and the famous Electric Map) so the provenance could not be better. This is the first time that this artifact is being offered for public sale and I feel very privileged in the opportunity to offer it. The Rosensteels were, of course, the most famous artifact collecting family in Gettysburg and the bulk of the relics on display at today's Gettysburg National Park Visitor Center come from the Rosensteels. A provenance letter will be provided with these relics. We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic, and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Some land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the items were recovered.
