Description: Georgian Era Hinged Silverplate Sugar Tongs Hallmarked Early rococo style silverplate sugar tongs or nips cut and serve sugar from a cube using a hinged scissor form mechanism originally produced between 1720 -1770. The central circular plate of this particular piece is embellished with a rosette design on one side and marked “EP” (generic symbol for electroplate) stamped alongside additional hallmarks son the back. (see photo) These scrolled handle tongs have a cutting edge between the arms with flat grips at tip, one of which has been monogramed. The piece shows signs of wear with surface scratches consistent with use and age. The tongs have a hefty weight when held in the hand. The hinge is secure in good working condition. This type of early hinged scissor design used in England in the mid 1700's was succeeded by more functional bow type tongs after 1770.
