Gene Carrol was better know as Mean Gene Okerlund (December 19, 1942 - January 2, 2019) the long time announcer/personality for the WWF (World Wrestling Federation). He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006. While still in high school in Sisseton, South Dakota, he and some friends formed a band called Gene Carrol and the Shades. They produced their first single in 1959, with M & L Records, called "Do you Remember" and "Red Devil". They mostly played locally in clubs, armories, and high school gyms. They had a following in South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa. They put out a second record in 1962. The band broke up in the early 1960's. Gene Okerlund went on to study broadcast journalism at the University of Nebraska. He worked as a radio disc jockey, radio host and for a television station before landing his announcer position in 1970 with the AWA (American Wrestling Association) Gene Carrol and the Shades were inducted in the South Dakota Rock Rollers Hall of Fame in 2009.
