Description: In 1819 Major Stephen Long led a party of naturalists, topographers and artists on a two year expedition to discover the secrets of the unknown American continent. He called the area of his exploration the “Great American Desert” – the land stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. In 1823 Edwin James compiled the findings of the expedition including the art of Titian Ramsay Peale and Samuel Seymour. “From Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains – Major Stephen Long’s Expedition (1819-1820)” is the 1988 edition edited by Maxine Benson and published as part of the Fulcrum series in American History. There are numerous color and black & white images, including many images not found in the original 1823 edition.
