Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Pearl S. Buck's "The Good Earth," a Limited edition, Illustrated by Anthony Young Chen, one of the PULITZER PRIZE series, published in 1975---the first year Franklin Library produced leatherbound books! Bound in Moroccan grain brown leather, the book has red moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, who lived from 1892-1973, was born in West Virginia, but was reared in China, where her parents were missionaries. Educated at Randolph-Macon and Cornell, she returned to China to be a missionary and teacher at Chinese universities. Buck knew the country and the people, and at first hand saw the bond between the peasants and the land they worked. She married JOHN BUCK, but later left China and settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where she opened a home for children of "mixed blood." Published in 1931, "The Good Earth" is the story of WANG LUNG, a Chinese peasant, who rises to become a rich landowner and founder of a powerful family. He is dominated throughout his life by a reverence for the soil. His marriage to O-Lan, formerly a kitchen slave in the HOUSE OF HWANG intensifies this feeling, for her starved youth has impressed upon her the lessons of carefully husbandry and the security that comes only from possession of land. During one severe drought, Wang Lung takes his family South, where O-Lan and the children beg in the streets, but after a riot, O-Lan finds pearls and diamonds in a great house. She takes the valuable jewelry and gives to her husband but keeps the pearl inside by her breast. Eventually, Wang Lung asks for the pearl---and later gives the pearl to LOTUS! Ouch! During strenuous years of hardship, famine, flood, disease, and ceaseless labor, Wang Lung and patient homely O-lan accumulate their acres, many of them bought from the declining House of Hwang. Three sons and two daughters are born to them, and they live more luxuriously. Wang Lung takes a second wife the attractive former prostitute, LOTUS, but O-Lan manages the household until her death. Their sons grow to manhood, the two eldest superintending their father's affairs, while the youngest becomes a revolutionary leader. All three divorce their lives from the soil. . .going against Want Lung's advice to "never sell the land!" Pearl Buck was the first American woman to receive the NOBEL PRIZE in 1932. 345 pages.
